The University of Ghent, Belgium, in collaboration with Justice Initiative, hosted a private seminar on May 8, 2023, on the specific legal aspects of repression, reparation, reparation and prevention of abuse of Metis children since colonisation.

The colloquium was attended by Martien Schotsmans (Director Federal Institute for the protection and promotion of Human Rights Belgium); Prof. PhD. Tine Destrooper (UGent); Prof. PhD. Nicolas Angelet (Free University Brussels ULB), PhD. Student Maxim Smets (Leuven University), Conrad Bryan (Justice Initiative Ireland) and
Prof. PhD. Stefaan Smis (Free University Brussels VUB).

In particular, topics such as crimes against humanity, limitations due to statute-barred legislation and the tools and techniques offered by transitional justice were discussed. The inspiration for the seminar was the motion submitted by Justice Initiative to the Council of Europe in autumn 2021.

Justice Initiative was represented by Conrad Bryan, a graduate of the National University of Ireland, Galway, where he gained a 1st class master’s degree in International Human Rights Law in 2022 at the Irish Centre for Human Rights.

Also present for Justice Initiative were Jacqui Goegebeur, Monique Schmeitz and Rodrigo van Rutte: all of them are among the survivors photographed in the photo exhibition ‘SHAME – European Stories’.
