Belgrade, May 8-9th 2025 As part of the Belgrade Photo Month, the exhibition “Shame – European Stories” made a stop in Belgrade. The portraits of abuse survivors from across Europe – including individuals from Serbia – sparked significant interest. Equally well received was the Justice Initiative, which calls for a thorough and consistent process of reckoning and justice. Guido Fluri was sought after by the media.

Switzerland has become a model in addressing past abuse cases – which is also the case in Serbia. Following the Council of Europe’s decision that member states must pursue justice based on the Swiss example, Guido Fluri, the initiator of the Swiss Reparation Initiative, has become a prominent figure. He explained the key pillars – scientific investigation, recognition, reparation, and prevention – through various Serbian media channels. See all media publications here: PRESS CENTER

Serbia has been a member of the Council of Europe since 2003. Therefore, Serbia is also obliged to pursue a comprehensive reckoning of abuse cases. Guido Fluri expressed optimism:

“In Serbia, I had several meetings, including with Minister Tatjana Macura, and I’m convinced that the process of addressing abuse and improving the situation for survivors is getting underway. I also met with NGOs here in Belgrade and felt that civil society is ready to bring about change in Serbia. I call on all forces to work together – across party lines.”

Survivors of abuse should receive recognition and reparation within their lifetime. Serbia has the potential to become a role model for the entire Balkan region.
